They say necessity is the mother of innovation, and in regards to EBWS, no truer words have ever been spoken. EBWS started out of a need. A need to create apparel that represents the black community’s best qualities, not a representation of our darkest impulses. No offense, but I have no desire to rock a Scarface tee. I might be a little rough around the edges, but I would not classify myself as a gangster. Therefore, I don’t imagine a time where I would want to wear a shirt that says, “Say hello to my little friend.” I wanted swag that spoke to the better part of me. I wanted to wear apparel that would be an accurate representation of how I viewed myself and how I wanted the world to view me. As a black man, and knowing the history of black folks. I wanted to wear clothing that spoke to my community’s creativity, ingenuity, our ability to overcome, our hustle, our drive. Black folks are revered for their presence and feared for this ability to persevere and effect change, and that is swag I want to wear. Thus the birth of EBWS.
